The drizzle lasted until half-way through the hike, and then we were in clouds, sometimes so thick you couldn't see the people you could hear talking until you were up close to them. We twice met the AOC group doing the 20-mile hike. In addition we passed an unidentified group hiking from Hog Pen to Unicoi, two boyscout groups doing the same hike from opposite directions, quite a number of two- and three-somes, and a trickle of early thru-hikers. If this traffic, on a wet day, is a harbinger of what is to come, we may have to escape to the Bartram Trail.

The total elevation gain was a bit more than I had estimated from the map: it was 2905 ft.

Ten of us enjoyed a convivial dinner in Helen afterwards, and it was still daylight when we left the restaurant.
