Minimum When Participating With AOC

Equipment:
  • Skiing: Skis, Poles and Ski Boots
  • Boarding: Board and Snowboard Boots
  • Snow Shoeing: Snow Shoes, Poles
Supplies:
  • Daypack
  • Plenty of Water
  • Energy-rich snacks (dried fruit, chocolate, energy bars etc)
  • Avoid bringing carbonated drinks which may explode with a lot of movement
  • Avoid drinking boxes since they cannot be re-sealed if you do not finish them or want to save some for later
Dress in layers (see article from MEC):
  • Synthetic underwear layer to wick moisture away from skin
  • Wool or synthetic (fleece) warming layer(s)
  • Water/wind proof outer layer to protect you from the elements
  • Do *NOT* wear cotton (including jeans), especially for your inner layer. Cotton will hold moisture (and cold) against your body, rather than wicking it away like a synthetic layer will.
Protect your skin and extremities:
  • Gloves or Mitts
  • Toque or Headband, Neck Warmer
  • Warm/waterproof boots
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (snow glare can give you a vicious burn)
  • UV blocking chapstick
Additionally, What You Might Need When Going (Especially On Your Own)

Equipment:
  • Equipment Repair Kit
  • "Sit-Upon": small closed-cell foam pad
  • Garbage bag to line daypack for water proofing
  • Camera
Supplies:
  • Extra Snacks
  • Toilet paper in ziploc bag, extra bag to carry paper out
  • Plastic/garbage bag to carry out garbage
  • Thermos of hot liquids
Clothing:
  • Ski Goggles
  • Snow pants/snow suit
  • Extra pair of socks, mitts, gloves, etc for if the others get wet and uncomfortable
  • Gaiters
  • Those little heat things for your mitts or boots
Emergency:
  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight (it gets dark earlier than you think)
  • Emergency Heat Source (ie. candles, matches)
  • Basic understanding of hypothermia, signs and what to do
  • Personal identification
  • Emergency whistle (use SOS code if in trouble)
  • Map and compass
  • Collapsible shovel
  • Nylon tarp
