Itinerary:

Historic Virginia Highland
is Atlanta's most popular neighborhood for shopping, dining and nightlife. Virginia Highland was developed in the early 1900's. It's known for nice bungalows and other historic houses from the 1910s-1930s. The neighborhood's name derives from the intersection of Virginia and Highland Avenues.

We will walk approximately four miles, starting and ending at the Plaza Theater on Ponce de Leon Avenue. The Plaza is Atlanta's oldest cinema, supporting independent film, and showing the famous "Rocky Horror Picture Show" movie every Friday at midnight.

We will walk through, respectively by, the John Howell Memorial Park (named after Virginia Highland resident and anti-freeway activist John Howell); the Orme Park; the Inman Middle school (named after Samuel Martin Inman who was a prominent cotton merchant and businessman in Atlanta); the Druid Hill Presbyterian Church, known for providing meals to homeless people on Sunday afternoon's.

A word about safety: Be "street smart", as you should be in any big city after dark. You should also know that, "Virginia-Highland serves as a model for other neighborhoods of Atlanta in implementing a comprehensive range of safety measures".

At around 11:00pm we will be back at the Plaza Theater, where the official AOC Urban Hike will come to an end. Some of us may grab a drink and a bite and watch the "interactive" Rocky Horror Picture Show movie afterwards. Whether you'll join us or call it a night after our hike .... is of course completely up to you.
