| Itinerary: |
The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many peaks that make for superb hiking and offer incredible views. For this series, we are counting down the tallest mountains in GA.

Summit GA's Highest Peaks thread
#3 - Dicks Knob
Standing 4620' above sea level with 160 feet of clean prominence, Dicks Knob is the 3rd tallest in GA.
We will begin this hike on the Beech Creek trail off of Tate City road, just over the NC border. Along the way, we will take a slight detour to view High Falls, where we will stop for a snack break. From here, we backtrack just a bit to take a steep side trail that climbs about 800 feet in less than half a mile to join the AT at Beech Gap.
We will leave the AT shortly thereafter later and bushwhack south for 2.1 miles. We will cross over Little Bald (5015') and then cross the state line into GA and down to Dicks Knob...a little unusual to descend to one of the highest peaks, but it will be something different. Then we will return the way we came in.
This is an "Explorer" trip (hence the max group size of 8) because we have not scouted out the route beforehand. However there is info online that it is very doable. We will have maps, compass, plus GPS...should be a fun adventure...
Summary: Beech Creek trail and AT hiking: ~6.9 miles Bushwhacking: ~4.2 mi
Total distance: ~11.1 mi Total ascent: ~4000' Click on elevation profile for larger version:
PLEASE NOTE: Because this a D6 Explorer event, it is only open to those who have recently completed some tough AOC D5 hikes or backpacking trips, |

| Carpool Cost: | |
Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $79.92 (calculated at total miles (216) * $0.370, effective Wednesday, September 08, 2010). This is based on the current gas, maintenance, and other costs of $0.370 per mile as stated by the IRS & Cars.com. This should be divided by the total number of people in the vehicle (incl driver). For example: With 4 people in the vehicle, the expense per person on this trip would be $19.98 Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. Your carpool driver will confirm exactly how much money they require to cover costs. Please split the actual cost among all people in the vehicle.
