Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary. | |||||||
Itinerary: | |||||||
Let's indulge in a double feature with outstanding payoffs including stunning views of the Hiwassee River Valley, Lake Chatuge, and the Eastern Continental Divide. We'll also be able to point out Brasstown Bald, Tray Mountain, and Unicoi Gap. (Note: due to icy conditions, the forest service road leading to the Eagle Mountain trail head was impassable. After climbing Bell Mountain, we opted for 'Plan B' which was climbing nearby Mt Yonah. The difficulty rating was revised to reflect the change in itinerary.) We will warm up with a hike up the road that leads to the top of Bell Knob. We'll gain about 700 feet in approximately one mile, part of which will be on a paved road shared with motorized vehicles. A reasonable investment for a panoramic view of the surrounding area, including the Hiwassee River and Lake Chatuge. Plus we will check out the new 18 acre Bell Mountain Summit donated to Towns County. In February of 2016, land donated to Towns Country was formally named Bell Mountain Park and Historical Site. The observation deck erected was named and dedicated as the Hal Herrin Scenic Overlook. Since then the county erected a second platform rising to 3,424 feet of elevation offering 360 degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains. Your Trip Leaders will provide an overview of the history of white quartzite mining and sanctioned graffiti on Bell Mountain as we explore the Park. We'll be able to size up Eagle Mountain before we climb it later. We'll retrace our steps back down the trail and commence our summit of Eagle Mountain. En route, we'll encounter clear views including that of nextdoor neighbor Bell Knob to the west with its sparkling patches of white quartzite. The views will open up as we gain elevation through a series of steep switchbacks. We'll pass through hardwood forest and rhododendron tunnels on our way to the Eagle Mountain summit. Once at the top, we'll continue a bit further to check out the view from a rocky outcropping before heading to the main overlook. We will then do some exploring around the area which will likely include a bit of bushwhacking. After adventuring around for a while, we'll return the way we came. This hike is NOT a beginner hike; it includes over 3,100 feet of elevation gain and descent. If you do not have recent D4/D5 experience with the AOC, your Trip Leaders may contact you to determine your suitability. We reserve the right to remove anyone who is not a good match for this event.
