Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
The Walls of Jericho is a 750-acre natural area in the Bear Hollow Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Tennessee and the Skyline WMA in Alabama. We will start on the Alabama side and hike down about 4 miles into the canyon, hang out for a while to relax and take a dip in the water, then return the same way back up. "The Walls" enclose a narrow canyon, about half a mile long, with 200- foot-high vertical limestone bluffs on each side. The halfway point in our hike culminates in a bowl-shaped area known as the amphitheater, where the waters of Turkey Creek emerge from the base of the bluffs. Embedded in the limestone are bowling ball-size holes from which water drips, creating a unique water feature. A bit of scrambling over a short but tricky step-up in the canyon floor will take us to “the hole.” Here, water trickles, or sometimes pours, from upstream into a deep pit where it disappears into the ground. According to legend, Davy Crockett explored the area in the late 1700s. The site was named by a preacher who performed baptisms there in the late 1800s. The towering bluffs reminded him of the walls that tumbled down after Joshua's Israelite army marched around the city blowing their trumpets. We will tramp over rocky terrain and along creeks as we descend steeply into the canyon. Coming back out will be a steady 1,000 foot climb. Depending on time and interest, we may stop and check out the Little River Canyon on the way back.
