Why “Tally Poocha” When we posted this event last year, while we were getting ready to put-in, this little, scrawny, black dog came out of nowhere at this somewhat remote boat launch. He immediately focused his attention on Heidi and we didn’t know what to do with him, but we knew we couldn’t just leave him to become coyote bait. Thomas’ suggestion: ‘Let’s just take him down the river with us and see what happens’. 15 minutes later Thomas already named him Tally, after the Tallapoosa River, and the rest is history. About our paddle John came across this section of the Tallapoosa River, last year, while on the Loyd Owens Canoe trail, near Heflin, AL. We'll be covering 16.7 miles of this small river and we'll be shuttled to our start point by the Tallapoosa River Outfitters (TRO) . We'll meet at their parking lot at 10 AM Central Standard Time - which is one hour earlier than our time here in Georgia. For the first 11 miles, or so, it is likely we'll be the only ones on the river. There can be some tricky areas to navigate around due to fallen trees. Because of this, the pace and the overall distance we are covering (16.7 miles), this is not a good event for a beginner kayaker. There are some class 1 rapids and if the water is up, perhaps a class 2 in a few spots, but for the most part we will maintain our pace through moderate paddling (approximately 5 hours). We'll find a spot or two, along the way, for a quick break and to stretch our legs. We'll meet at the Outfitter promptly at 10 AM Central Standard Time and they'll load up our kayaks (or canoes) on their trailer and shuttle us to our put in location at the Dryden Mill Campsite. If you bring your own boat, there is a $15 per person shuttle fee. If you would like to rent a kayak, $35 covers a single kayak, paddle, PFD and shuttle. Please call the outfitter if you need to reserve a boat. Optionally, we will stop for a bite to eat after the paddle. | |||||||
