Itinerary: | |||||||
The Cherokee Trail, also known as the Stone Mountain Loop, circles the mountain for a hike of about 5.5 miles PLUS up to the top of the mountain. We will take a "garden trail" to the Cherokee Trail - up the granite side to the main trail up to the top and then descend to finish the Cherokee Trail back around to the garden trail. Let's get the climb done first and then enjoy the scenic portion of the hike. The scenic hike takes us past two lakes, an old time gristmill, a historic covered bridge, and offers great views of the mountain. At times we will hike on exposed granite and at other times be will hike along wooded trails. When I go up hill I'm not the fastest, but maintain a "breathable" pace - on the rest of the hike - I'm maintaining close to a 2.5 to 3.0 speed. We will meet at the "Caboose" - this is on the main drag of Stone Mountain Village on the left just past the police station and just past the railroad tracks. Look for my black subaru. This is a free park area with an excellent path into the park. Let's meet there at 8:45 AM to start the hike at 9AM. PLEASE NOTE: We will maintain a 2.5 to 3.0 on the Cherokee, Nature, and Garden trails....if you cannot maintain that speed - then I would recommend that you pick another hike. Since we increased the trail distance- a total of 9 miles - I've upped this to a D4. Our total distance is 9 miles with 1000 ft elevation gain. | |||||||
