Itinerary: | |||||||
Hi all. I would like to do the Georgia loop this spring, but since I don't have any three-day weekends, I will be doing this as a two-part series. The GA Loop is a large loop backpack comprised of the Appalachian trail, the Benton Mackaye trail, and the Duncan Ridge trail (the toughest hike in Georgia. This is the first part of a two-part series to complete the loop. We will hike 24 miles in this section. Saturday: (11.7 miles) We will meet at Woody Gap and leave at least one car at this trailhead. We will then continue up to the BMT roadcrossing on 60 to start our hike. We will go south along the Benton Mackage trail crossing the beautiful Taccoa Bridge after about 3 miles. We will continue and reach the Appalachian trail at mile 10 and take a short detour to enjoy Long Creek falls. Afterwards, we will hike two more miles to reach Hawk Mountain shelter, where we will stay for the night. Sunday: (11.9 miles) Today we will hike the rest of the way to Wood Gap along the Appalachian Trail. We will retrieve the cars before returning home. Note: This is an advanced backpack, not for beginners. If you do not have a history of backpacks with the club, the team leader may contact you to verify your ability.
