Itinerary: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Join us on this late night / early morning adventure, as we watch the Perseid Meteor Shower, from atop Georgia's highest mountain. Brasstown Bald rises 4,784 feet above sea level, so we'll be away from most unwanted light pollution. Be sure you dress for your comfort, as the temperatures can be cooler on top of the mountain even in the summer. Bring something to relax on... a sleeping pad, reclining chair, etc, and your choice of snacks and beverages. A blanket or comforter would be a good idea too. Then kick back as you take in the magnificent views! The moon doesn't rise until about 3am and will just be a 13% waning crescent, so should not interfere much this year. This is officially D1 event, because the hike up to the BB summit is about 0.5 mi and gains 375'. However if you prefer to just hang out in the parking lot and watch the meteors, that is fine too. Tony will likely be going up and down, at least two times, using both the road and the paved trail, so should be multiple opportuniies throughout the night to walk up there. This event is largely weather dependent, because of course we need clear skies, so could be canceled if the forecast is Overcast or worse. The Perseids are caused by Earth passing through debris, left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which last passed nearby in 1992. Look to the north, and you can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour during the peak, which is between 1 and 4am.
