Itinerary: | |||||||
Join me as I explore a new section of my favorite trail, the Cumberland Trail. The Cumberland Trail is an ambitious hiking trail project currently under development. When completed, the CT will extend more than 300 miles from the Cumberland Gap in Kentucky to Signal Point, just outside of Chattanooga. Currently over 200 miles are open with the trail slated for completion in late 2019*. Additionally, the CT is part of the Great Eastern Trail, which is under development and will extend from Alabama to New York when completed.
We will start at the Barker Camp Road Trailhead. If you have done one of my North Chick hikes in the past, this is a DIFFERENT TRAILHEAD! Our first 1.1 miles will be on the blue blazed connector trail, at this point we will find a signpost for the Cumberland Trail. Initially we will turn left and head towards the Panther Branch Overlook. This overlook is stunning and has been a favorite lunch spot when hiking my other North Chick hikes. We will stop here for pictures and joke telling before turning around and going back to the signpost. Turning left at the signpost we will begin our trek on new CT miles. Down the gorge we go as we head towards Cain Creek and a bridge across the strong flow of the Cain. This area is quite picturesque and begins our creek side portion of the hike. We will walk next to Cain Creek followed by North Chickamauga Creek passing scenic views and waterfalls until we reach a swimming hole with a rope swing. It will probably be a little too chilly for a swim, but this will serve as our turn around point and lunch spot. After lunch we will retrace our steps back to our waiting cars for the journey home. This difficult hike has many technical rocky sections. Recent D5 experience is required to join the fun. Under qualified adventurers will be move to the waitlist to be vetted.

The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
