Riding The Silver Comet: Rockmart And Back - Wheels Down 8 AM

LET'S SPIN!

Join us for a popular 30-mile round trip bike ride along the scenic and shady Silver Comet Trail. This paved rails-to-trail path stretches from Smyrna to the Alabama state line.

We’ll begin our journey at the Rambo Trailhead near Dallas, riding to Rockmart and back.

We’ll pedal at a moderate pace of 10-15 mph, but feel free to choose your own speed—whether it’s fast, casual, or leisurely. With breaks and photo opportunities, plan for about 3 to 3.5 hours of enjoyable and healthy exercise. You’ll feel fantastic after completing this ride! 

OUR RIDE

 Early on after we start our ride,  we will cross the Pumpkinvine Trestle, which is 750 feet long and 126 feet high.

 Then for the next eight miles, we pass thru Paulding Forest, which is basically a hilly pine woods. The hills will not affect us however, since we will be on the old rail bed, with all its cuts and fills.

  Before we emerge from the forest, we go thru the 800 foot long Brushy Mountain Tunnel - definitely stop to take your picture here!

  Then it's mostly open green pasture till we get to Rockmart. 

We will pass the sparkling reflective Coot's Lake and reach our destination of Rockmart (Popular rider destination & turn-around point), and then pedal back to our starting point.

1. HELMET REQUIRED TO BE WORN - NO HELMET, NO BIKE RIDE, BYE...BYE

2. Electric or electric assist bicycles not permitted on this ride - you will provide your own pedal power :)

3.  You are responsible for your bike maintenance and repairs on the trail. Be sure to inspect your bike the night before our ride and air up your bike tires.

4. You will need to check out with the Trip Leader at the end of the ride to receive AOC credit for this event.

  Directions - Overview

  • Rambo Rd Trailhead is near the city of Dallas in Paulding County, Georgia
  • It's just west of the Hwy-278/Buchanan Hwy intersection
  • Hwy-278 is northwest of Atlanta, and runs east to west towards Alabama

  Directions (GPS: 33.9151946235719, -84.86834529830784)

  • Note: Highway-278 mile markers start over in every county
  • Go to mile marker 8 on Hwy-278, in Paulding County
    (just west of the Hwy-278/Buchanan Hwy intersection)
  • Near mile marker 8, you'll find the intersection of Hwy-278 and Bonnie Lane/West memorial Drive
    • There is no red light at this intersection
    • Bonnie Lane is on the east-bound lane of Hwy- 278; you'll see the sign for Rambo Nursery
    • West Memorial Drive is on the west-bound lane of Hwy- 278
  • Turn on Bonnie Lane (east side of Hwy- 278)
  • Take the next left onto Tucker Road
  • Tucker Rd will dead-end (short distance) at The Rambo Rd Trailhead parking lot, The Silver Comet Trail, and Rambo Nursery
