Itinerary: | |||||||
Enjoy spectacular views from the top of Blood Mountain! Departing from Lake Winfield Scott we’ll pass by rushing Slaughter Creek, ascend about a mile to Jarrard Gap, turn left on the Appalachian Trail, then climb the flanks of Gaddis Mountain. A right turn on the Freeman Trail and a rocky traverse around the south side of Blood Mountain brings us to Flatrock Gap. Then a left turn puts us back on the AT for the steep climb up to the Blood Mountain summit at 4458 ft elevation. After a break for snacks and photos, it's downhill and southbound on the AT and the Slaughter Creek trail to return to lake Winfield Scott. This is a tough hike - Trails are steep, rocky, and include some boulder hopping. You should be able to climb a steep grade at a steady pace without repeated rest stops.

How to Get There: | |||||||
Event Directions: | Take GA 400 N about 42 miles, then left onto SR 60/19 toward Dahlonega. Continue about 15 miles on 60/19 to Suches then take a right on SR 180. After about 5 miles turn right to the entrance road to the Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area. $5.00 CASH parking. As you drive toward the lake, pass the campground on the right, then left into the parking area. Once you park, you can easily see the lake. If you get to the pavilion on your left overlooking the lake, you've gone too far. From the parking area, the trailhead is located across the lake outlet, then to the right. The campground restrooms are sometimes open. Parking is $5.00 cash (Lake Winfield Scott is in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, but I have received a warning ticket for using my National Parks Pass)

Carpool Cost: | Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $50.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
