Itinerary:

Join me as we enjoy the mountains, trails and lake at Black Rock Mountain State Park! We'll have beautiful long-range views an crisp December skies as we explore Georgia's highest elevation state park. It's ben a long time since I've hiked here, and I'm including a trail section that I've never hiked before.

We will meet at the parking lot for the Tennesse Rock Loop Trailhead. Our adventure begins with a 2.2 mile counterclockwise loop around the Tennessee Rock Loop and up Black Rock Mountain, where we will pause to enjoy the scenic vistas. Next we'll head downhill and clockwise onto the James Edmonds Loop trail, making a short detour onto the Black Rock Lake trail at the bottom of the park.

Next we'll start uphill again, ascending 900 feet to the Lookout Mountain Overlook at mile 6.5 to enjoy excellent northern views. Somewhere along the way we will stop for lunch. We will stop for lunch either by the lake or at Lookout Mountain Overlook, depending on how we feel. After the Overlook we'll continue th eloop, heading downhill and then uphill to finish our adventure. we may plan an optional side trip to Clayton for an after-hike round of refreshments.

The hike is approximately 10.5 miles with 2,700 feet elevation gain. It's a challenging D5 mountain trek. You'll need recent D5 or equivalent hiking experience and be comfortable moving at a moderate pace of 2.6 mph. If you don't have recent D5 or higher hiking experience with the AOC we will be in contact to determine whether this event is right for you.
