Itinerary:

I will be co-leading this hike with Lisa Anyan Smith. This will be my first hike as a Volunteer Trip Leader candidate. I've done this trail many times and stayed at the Hike Inn overnight. We will park at the Top of Amicalola Falls parking lot, then head up the path to the Approach Trail/Hike Inn Trail. We'll take the path to the right towards the Hike Inn, for a total of 4.9 miles. We'll stop for a lunch break at the Hike Inn, where there is a bathroom and a nice view. After a 20-30 minute stop, we'll go to the right from the HI and head toward the Approach Trail. We will take a left at the Approach Trail and head back to the Top of Amicalola Falls, completing an 11 mile loop. The path is up and down and well marked; it could be a little muddy near the creek beds if it's rained recently.

The pace will be moderate (about 2.5 miles/hour). The elevation gain, pace, and distance give this hike a difficulty rating of D4. If you don't have recent D3/D4 experience, this is not a suitable event for you. We will stay together during the hike.

Total time for the hike and lunch break is approximately 5 hours.

Event Directions:

We will meet either at the carpool as described at 0720 or at the top of the falls parking lot at Amicalola Falls State Park. The trailhead, restrooms, and falls overlook are located here. There are two levels of parking if the uppermost lot is full.

An approximate address for the park entrance is 280 Amicalola Falls State Park Rd, Dawsonville, Georgia 30534. See the top of this event description for GPS coordinates and a map link. Allow extra time if you're not sure where we're meeting.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $40.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

There is a $5 entrance fee per vehicle at Amicalola Falls State Park if you don't have a Georgia state park pass.

The Hike Inn usually offers complimentary drinks (and leftover dessert) to day hikers. The staff accepts tips in exchange for their hospitality. We will plan to eat our lunch outside.
