Itinerary: | |||||||
The Cumberland Plateau is so cool! It features lofty vistas, deep rivers, cascading creeks, plunging ravines, and boulders galore. Let's enjoy hiking on one of the best sections of the Cumberland Trail, going from Signal Point to North Suck Creek. This trek includes all of the above, plus weird rock formations and a 225-foot long swinging bridge over North Suck Creek. Our journey begins on the unusual Rainbow Lake Wilderness Trail, where we will hike a bit over half a mile downhill to Middle Creek and its nifty little suspension bridge. Crossing it, we continue to the intersection with the Cumberland Trail. we'll enjoy some nice cliffs as we hike out of the small ravine and up to the top of the plateau as we wind over to Edwards Point Overlook, where we can stop and enjoy great views of the Tennessee River. Our trek continues along the top rim as we cross small streams before we eventually reach Mushroom Rock: a must-see feature of the CT! At this point we'll head straight down into the gorge until we reach North Suck Creek (yes, there's an interesting story behind its name). We'll cross the bridge for the fun of it and then head down to water's edge for lunch. Afterwards we'll climb out of the canyon and retrace our steps to our cars. Much thanks to Ron Jacobs, the AOC’s Cumberland Trail expert, for the map and the photo! IMPORTANT: The hike is 13 miles with approximately 2,700 feet elevation gain. It's a challenging D5 mountain trek. You'll need recent D5 or equivalent hiking experience and be comfortable moving at a moderate pace of 2.7 mph over occassionally rocky ground. If you don't have recent D5 or higher hiking experience with the AOC we will be in contact to determine whether this event is right for you.
