Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

I am planning several *Hike ‘n Splash* hikes this summer. I have done a few last summer as participant.  However, I have not yet led these kind of hikes, thus the designation “Exploratory”.  Be assured that I prepare for those hike … maps, GPS, water filter, first aid kit, etc.  If you have any suggestions for a nice *Hike ‘n Splash* destination, please let me know.  All these hikes should be D2s, D3s, or an “easy” D4 … because I’d like the “not yet advanced", and/or new members of the AOC to enjoy a day of hiking at/to a river or waterfall without getting anxious or exhausted. Sounds good?

Please join me on the River Loop Trail which is outside of Ellijay in the Rich Mountain Wilderness Area. We'll hike to the river, hang out on the rocks for some lunch, swimming, sunning and play. Once we've had enough - probably around 2 hours total - we'll head back to the cars.

Best guess is that we'll be back at Chastain around 5PM.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Hiking shoes/boots
  • GORP Pass required
  • Water and / or sports drinks
  • Lunch / snacks
  • Swimsuit / towel
  • Water shoes
  • Sun screen

Important Note:  I just learned about the requirement to have a Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass (GORP) ... or Hunting / Fishing License ... when we park at the Cartecay River.

There are two options: You go online and order a GORP. The least expensive one is an individual pass for three days, cost: $3.50 (The annual pass is $19.00). Click here to order online.

The second option is to buy it at a WalMart (sporting goods department). Just called the Ellijay WM and verified this. Just in case ... here is the link to the WalMart in Ellijay. Click here for the address.

We will continue North on 515 to Route 52, turn right on to Route 52.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $47.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
