Fort Mountain is named for a mysterious 855 foot long wall constructed along the western slope of the highest point of the mountain. The structure has been attributed to various historical figures, but today most authorities believe the wall was constructed by Woodlands-era Indians between 500 BC and 500 AD as fortification against other more hostile Indians or ancient ceremonies.

The Gahuti Trail travels around the edge of the park, passing just below the summits of Cohutta and Fort mountains. Ever changing, the trail is both beautiful and challenging in all seasons.

Even though I've made this a D4 it's a fairly easy trail, the D4 is mainly for the length.  This is a very scenic trail that features great views and water features. We'll take it at a fairly moderate pace and stop for lunch/snack at a good vista.

We'll start with the Gahuti Trail loop, then check out the stone wall, lastly we'll take a short walk to an awesome overlook before proceeding home.
