Itinerary: | |||||||
Join us on a brisk hike on the trails of Sawnee Mountain. The mountain is the highest point in Forsyth County and is actually about 100 feet higher than its neighbors, Kennesaw Mountain and Stone Mountain. Set on 963 acres just north of Cumming, the Sawnee Mountain Preserve has much to offer with picnic shelters, a playground, a comfort station, an outdoor amphitheater, a fascinating visitor center, and a network of foot trails along the slopes of 1,963-foot-high Sawnee Mountain. This Forsyth County park opened to hikers in 2005 and has become a favorite with folks wanting a taste of the mountains without traveling long distances north. Sawnee Mountain Preserve offers more than 4 miles of trails along slopes and over the mountain summit. We'll spend a little time at the summit to enjoy the view and take pictures. The view at the top is phenomenal, especially on a clear day, and a big pay-off for the uphill climb. Jerry and Joyce are doing their best to put in an order for perfect weather for our hike. (A big welcome to Jerry as he continues his training as an AOC Trip Leader!) Because of the pace and the elevation, this is NOT a hike for beginners. We've listed it as a D3 for this reason. If you want a more moderate hike today, try our No Excuses hike at Fowler Park later in the day. It's not far from Sawnee Mountain. That event starts at 1:30 pm. (Check the listing on the AOC site for information and directions.) Everyone is invited to join us for lunch after the hike at Chepe's Mexican Grill. (5465 Bethelview Rd, Ste 560, Cumming, GA 30040) Directions from Sawnee are given below.
