Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
Jarrard Gap Trail, Appalachian Trail to Blood Mountain and return via Slaughter Gap Trail is our pathway from Lake Winfield Scott to Blood Mountain for a wonderful summer view of the North Georgia Mountains. Lake Winfield Scott was completed in 1942 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The lake and all of it’s buildings, roads and structures are the work of the Corps and remains intact today. We will begin our hike at on the Jarrard Gap Trail, We’ll then take the AT to the summit of Blood Mountain. At the top, we’ll enjoy lunch/snack while taking in the view from the top of Blood Mountain. Our descent will be down the other side of Blood 2 miles to the Slaughter Gap Trail (2.7 miles). Overall around 8 miles with some strenuous climbing at a Moderate pace. Approximate elevation gain for this hike is 2000 ft. We stop at all of the turns/crossroads to keep the group together and for water breaks. We might take a quick dip in Lake Winfield Scott. Be courteous to your driver, and bring a towel for drying off before gettin in to the driver's car. Overall time should be approximately 4.5/5 hours of hiking. There is $5 parking at Lake Winfield Scott, so please have cash.
