Event Overview:

This will be a free “bring-your-own-bike” event, and if you’d like to take part in the “potluck style” poolside cookout following the ride, bring something to throw on the grill and a small side item to share, plus your swimsuit & towel if you’d like to enjoy the pool.

Just a half hour south of downtown Atlanta, Peachtree City is well known for its park-like atmosphere, beautiful lakes, and miles of paved meandering “cart paths” which are highly popular for bicycling as well as hiking, etc. Mountain bikes or “hybrids” are preferable on these sometimes-bumpy asphalt paths, and road bikes with narrow tires should be avoided.

Early June is an ideal time to explore the area by bike. Colorful flowers, songbirds, and waterfowl add a special serenity to the shaded cart path corridors, and offer numerous opportunities for nature photography. Our general plan for this outing is to enjoy about a 15-mile loop of easy-paced bicycling (about 2 hours) with occasional stops to relax and take photographs. Our co-event-coordinator Lisa Santore lives in Wilshire Estates in Peachtree City. Lisa loves photography as well as cycling, and at several scenic spots along the way she’ll offer a few tips on photo framing, exposure, etc.

After the ride everyone is invited to stick around for the poolside cookout and enjoy a leisurely swim in the pool if you like.

Bike Riding Plan:
We’ll gather at 10:00 AM in the parking area adjoining the clubhouse and pool at Wilshire Estates in Peachtree City -- see detailed directions below). We’d like to be ready to roll by about 10:20 (after getting the bikes unloaded and introducing one another). We’ll have a bike pump on hand in case any of you need to top off your air, and at least one tire repair kit along on the ride in case anyone has a flat. We expect to be finished with the ride (+ rest/photo stops) by about 12:30. The loop ride will end in the same Wilshire Estates pool vicinity where we began the ride. Later in the afternoon if there's enough interest, we may offer an additional optional loop ride following the cookout and swim.

Cookout & Swim Plan:
As mentioned above, if you’d like to take part in the “potluck-style” cookout, just bring something simple to throw on the grill and a small side item to share (e.g., hors d’oeuvre, salad, covered dish, dessert, etc., in a small iced-down cooler). If you have a favorite beverage, consider bringing it also with you in your cooler. Charlie and Lisa will provide plenty of space on the grill, plus barbecuing implements, etc. Charlie will contribute paper plates, plastic-ware, cups, ice -- also condiments, a couple-dozen hotdogs, and a big tapper-cooler of ice cold lemonade. If you’d join us for a dip in the pool, don’t forget your swimsuit and a towel.

Required Items to Bring:
Bring your bike of course. (Please check it out before the day of the ride to ensure that it’s in good mechanical shape, tires OK, etc.) Plan to wear your helmet and carry a filled water bottle or two (or “Camelbak,” etc). Wear comfortable lightweight clothing appropriate for the weather. If you’d like to take part in our brief “nature photo-tips” sessions, don’t forget your camera. Consider also packing some lightweight raingear if showers are forecast and light binoculars for birdwatching. If you can stay for the cookout & swim, bring “potluck” items of your own choice as discussed above and your swimsuit & towel.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

4. Turn Left at the light onto Holly Grove Road (entering the Wilshire Estates subdivision of Peachtree City), and go just 0.1 mile.
