This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

The Chattooga River forms a natural boundary between South Carolina and Georgia. This 57 mile river flows through stunning landscapes and has some of the best whitewater in the Southeast.

Join us for a two-day backpack on one of the most scenic parts of the Chattooga River Trail, Section 3.

We will begin at Nicholson Ford and hike north approximately 4-5 miles along the Chattooga River Trail. On the way we will take in Lick Log Falls and the spectacular Rock Gorge, which forces the river into sections no more than 10 feet wide. After passing Rock Gorge we will decide on a suitable campsite.  Once we have set-up camp we will take a short side trip to Big Bend Falls. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday, we plan to do some exploring to Rock Gorge and Big Bend Falls, however, folks are free to do whatever they want (read, fish, take a different hike, etc.)... it's very flexible.

We will allow up to 2 well behaved dogs on this trip.

  • tent (or hammock)
  • sleeping bag
  • sleeping mat
  • 4 liters of water (less if you have a filter)
  • food/snacks for 2 days (at least 1 breakfast, 1 dinner and 2 lunches)
  • headlamp
  • sturdy hiking boots
  • cash for your carpool driver

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $92.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
