Itinerary:

This backpacking trip is designed for beginners who are reasonably fit and for those of you who want to experience a moderate backpacking trip to one of the more scenic destinations in Georgia.  We will backpack approximately 6 miles at a moderate pace. Beginning at Lake Winfield Scott, we'll backpack up the West face of Blood Mountain along the Slaughter Creek trail. After about 3 miles of backpacking, we'll look for a campsite shortly after the Slaughter Creek trail intersects the AT. This is a very popular destination, so we'll have to be somewhat flexible where we'll find camp. After lunch, we'll day hike up to the top of Blood Mountain. We'll then return to camp where everyone is on their own for dinner. Last year, a lot of of us shared various forms of mexican cuisine.  You don't have to share, but if you are so inclined, it's a lot of fun.  Also, we have experienced bears in this area before, so make sure you secure your food well.  The next day, we'll break camp around 10:00 AM and hike along the AT to the Jarrard Gap trail, which will return us to Lake Winfield Scott. We may have to pack water into the campsite or stop along the way to collect enough water for cooking and drinking because the creek that is closest to the campsite is currently dry.  Hopefully, we'll get some rain between now and then and we won't have to worry about it.  I'll keep you posted as we get closer to the event.

1 lunch, 1 dinner and 1 breakfast; hat, sleeping bag, and tent.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

North on GA 400. Take a left onto SR 60/19 toward Dahlonega. At the fork of SR 60 and SR 19, go straight on SR 60 to Suches. Take a right on SR 180.  The entrance to the Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area is on the right, approximately 7-8 miles on after you turn onto SR 180.  As you drive toward the lake, past the campground, the parking lot is located on the left, just before you get to the bridge. The trailhead is located across the bridge and to your right.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $52.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
