Sun, Sep 27 2015 - Super-Moon Total Eclipse! A Skygazing Night Hike at Mason Mill Park (View Original Event Details)
|
We had a delightful time together on this special full-moon Sunday night hiking event! Congrats to all of you who showed up and enjoyed the experience despite the overcast skies, and special thanks to Joyce and Lyndsay for helping welcome everyone!
Sadly due to the clouds we didn't get any views of the eclipsing "Super Moon" / "Harvest Moon," but there was plenty of nice bright "moonglow" of the full moon shining through the clouds, and we had no need for any lights for our jovial night hike to Medlock Park and back.
When the "Total" phase of the eclipse began at about 10:15 PM many of us were still enjoying one another's company atop the high observation deck, and we definitely could tell that there was eerie reddish glow in the clouds. This apparently was caused by the usual "blood moon" reddish glow of the fully eclipsed moon. The phenomenon results from the indirect rays of the Sun refracting through the Earth's atmosphere and reflecting back to the Earth from the Moon. In effect this "blood moon" is the combined reflected reddish glow of all the simultaneus sunrises and sunsets that are occurring all around the the Earth at any point in time!
