Write Up:The cool air and shade between 7:00 and 9:30 this morning felt refreshing during our 5-mile exploration of Emory's beautiful wooded trails, and our "getting up with the birds" was also rewarded by views of a red-shouldered hawk, a great blue heron and a belted kingfisher. Along the way we also took the time to admire dozens of species of trees and plants and smell the sweet grape-soda-scent of purple kudzu blossoms - perhaps the only "redeeming feature" of the invasive oriental vine!
During a brief stop near Candler Lake it was a pleasure getting to meet and chat with Bob Simon, the chief professional caretaker of Emory's parklands, who happens also to be an AOC member. He had just spotted a large deer by the lake, which we barely missed seeing. Bob, we look forward to having you join us on some future Emory hikes!
