Write Up: We 16 AOC volunteers had a wonderful time together on Cumberland Island over the Feb 25-28 Thu-Sun weekend and are proud to have "given back" to this crown jewel of America's barrier islands. Our arduous trail restoration and boardwalk building was focused on the "Bunkley Trail" whose trailhead adjoins the quaint little church on the Island's north end where JFK Jr. was married. The weather was perfect and we have many amazing stories to tell!
Our friendly hosts, Laura and Lawrence of the GA Conservancy and Jim of the Nat'l Park Service, did a bangup job organizing and overseeing everything - also pitching in personally with the hard trail work and safely moving us and our tons of gear, building supplies and tools around the Island.
Our amazingly well-equipped "Hunt Camp" group campsite was ideal for festive socializing, nightly roaring campfires and shared family potluck style meals & refreshments. Among the dozens of delicious culinary contributions were Jim Stovall's seafood gumbo, Lysa's spaghetti, David's pimiento cheese, Bobby's bacon & fire-roasted chicken, Tatiana's fresh salad, Phyllis's pound cake and Jim Galvin's bourbon-infused chocolates- not to mention Mara's daily Nutra-bullet purees of fresh greens, berries, and all things organic!
Thanks also to Mara for organizing two memorable hiking & beachcombing adventures that gave our volunteers an opportunity to see more of the Island's beautiful beaches, dunes and mossy liveoak forests - plus wild horses, birds, pigs and other fascinating fauna & flora.
