Thu, Aug 25 2016 - Thursday Morning Hike at Island Ford (View Original Event Details)
|
Today was a celebration day! We honored Bob's 100th AOC event as well as celebrating the National Parks Service Centennial birthday! Bob posed with the special 100th event sign, and Jeff G. brought balloons and cards for us to sign so that we could take them to the Visitor Center as a birthday present. The ranger on duty was delighted and posed with us for a picture. (What an awesomely generous and thoughtful gesture, Jeff G.!)
The hike itself was special, too! We had a brand new AOC member with us - - Sue W. - - who had no trouble keeping up with the group. And we took an off-trail trek (out of the park) where we unexpectedly found the remains of an old homestead, with a chimney and a stove still there! A black snake was keeping watch over the ruins, and smiled for a photo.
A large group of 16 headed to the North River Tavern for lunch after the hike. ~ Joyce
