Write Up:Every hike is an adventure, but we had a different type of adventure today. Three miles into our hike, we heard a crash and heard a woman yell for help. We rushed down the trail to find that an elderly biker had taken a bad fall and lay temporarily unconscious on the trail. Luckily, the woman who yelled for help (a jogger) was a nurse, so she performed a quick inspection of the man. Nothing seemed broken, he awakened, so she left to continue her run. However, our group stayed with the man in order to walk him out. (He was in no shape to get back on his bike.)
We felt that we should call for help, but he kept insisting that we call no one. His walk was unstable and he had to keep sitting down . . . so Bob R. took it upon himself to call 911. They were at the bridge as we left the trail, waiting for us. Although he insisted he didn't need them, they urged him to allow a quick check. We all left the area to allow them to do their work. 15 minutes later, we watched as they lifted the man (81 years old, as it turned out) onto a stretcher to take him to the hospital.
Quite an adventure! Oh! And we got to see a train crossing the trestle overhead as hiked below! An exciting sight! AND - - we had popsicles when we finished the hike!! (Thank you, Trena!) ~ Joyce
