Sun, Dec 17 2017 - Double Feature: Bell Knob and Mt Yonah (View Original Event Details)
|
AOC members are nothing if not adaptable. When the forest service road to the trailhead is impassable due to ice, we find a different trailhead. But first we visited the initial stop on our double feature, Bell Mountain. We learned about the complicated recent history of the mountain including a failed quartzite mining operation that left the summit ravaged and scarred, and its popularity as a hangout for locals that brought further defacing in the form of spraypainted graffiti. While the vandalism is jarring, the views from the top of the observation deck are unparalleled.
After enjoying the spectacular vista including Lake Chatuge, Brasstown Bald, Tray Mountain and Unicoi Gap, we made our way back down. Following our mini-adventure on the road to the Eagle Mountain trailhead, we headed to Yonah for an icy hike. After some photos and cameraderie with other hikers at the top, we descended back down. Most of us headed to Yonah Burger afterwards for tasty burgers and lively conversation. Hikers of the Round Table. It was a different day than we'd planned, but satisfying nonetheless.
