Georgia woke up to heavy fog that was only beginning to burn off as we gathered to begin our hike. We started off to the familar sound of gas-powered leaf blowers, but soon left them behind as we hiked into the woods.
Most trees had lost their leaves, and the trail surface was slippery at times from dewy leaves. As we continued, the fog lifted, leaving a clear blue sky that contrasted with the brown forest around us. Along the way, we saw a few mountain bikers, hikers, runners, and dogs, but the trail was far from crowded. We also were lucky to meet a caretaker of the restored fort building who let us inside to look around. We spotted at least two herons along the way, but mostly enjoyed the scenery of the still, broad lake.
We had a great group, sticking together most of the time and carying on lively conversation. It was the first time hiking this trail for almost everyone, and my (Alex's) first time as an AOC co-leader. What a beautiful day for it.
