Thu, Nov 8 2018 - Last Minute Powers Island Hike (Beginners Welcome) (View Original Event Details)
|
Our hike at Powers Island was a last minute to this weeks AOC hiking opportunities. It was a 3 miles, beginners welcome leg stretcher on an overcast day. Our hike started out by heading out the main trail from the parking lot and heading up through a cove that was extremely overgrown with ivy. After a half mile walk, we reached the high point of the hike. We took a quick detour to see the remains of an abandoned and largely destroyed dam. We descent back to the riverside was steep in places which made for some exciting times with the wet conditions. We passed an old elevated road bed that was shored up with stonework and also peered through the trees to see some old stone foundations.
We spent the next portion hiking along the edge of the Chattahoochee where we saw literally hundreds of ducks, geese and the occasional heron. Finally we crossed over to Powers Island itself and did an walk around the edge of the island, much of it on unofficial trails. Upon reaching the parking lot, our three mile hike was complete.
A special welcome to several of our hikers today who are relatively new to the club. Liz was on her 8th AOC event but first hike, Mireille was on her 3rd AOC event and Nikky was on her very first club event. We look forward to seeing you on future AOC events. ~ Holt
