Wed, Jun 19 2019 - Piedmont Park Early Evening Hike + Optional free outdoor Atlanta Symphony Concert (View Original Event Details)
|
We had a fine time together on this "Hiking + Atlanta Symphony" double-header Wednesday evening. Took advantage of a beautiful rain-free break in the weather and enjoyed the amazing outdoor "Greatest Opera Hits" along with about two thousand other music and nature lovers. Early in the hike we staked out an ideal shady viewing spot on the lawn of the huge natural "Oak Hill" amphitheatre. Thanks to Jerry & Gloria and Joyce's cousin Eleanor for watching our "stuff" at Oak Hill while most us continued the hike and rejoined them there just before the big concert began.
Many thanks also to Joyce for her fine job co-leading and for taking lots of colorful photos & video clips as she always does on every event! Here's the link to Joyce's hilarious 20-second video of Gerrilyn, Eleanor and me dancing to Offenbach's rousing Can-Can music: https://www.facebook.com/joyce.taaffe/videos/10157842756700260/
Conductor Stephen Mulligan, the Orchestra and five world-class opera singers did a bangup job performing the gorgeous music, including excerpts from Bizet's Carmen, Puccini's La Boheme, Verdi's Rigoletto and Gershwin's Porgy & Bess.
During our hike we explored some of Piedmont Park's lesser known "hidden gems" including the Six-Springs Wetland trail, an unfinished section of the Atlanta Beltline, and the lovely "Promenade" area just below the Atlanta Botanical Garden.
It was fun having new members Savannah and Eleanor join us for their very first event with the Club. Thanks to them and to our other fellow AOCers and ASO fans - friends both old and new - who made this such an unforgettable experience! Clear skies and a few nice breezes made it quite a pleasant evening. -Submitted by Charlie, 7AM Thursday
