Write Up:Today we hike Allatoona Pass, one of the most interesting but lesser used state heritage sites. This park was the location of two Civil War battles in 1864 and a most interesting railroad cut which pre-dated the war. While hiking, we learned much about the history of the property starting with a hike along the old Tennessee Wagon Road, visits to two Union forts and nearby earth works, the railcut itself and finally a visit to a Sherman Necktie. The middle portion of our hike included a lengthy walk along the shoreline of Lake Allatoona where we saw a wilderness shelter and numerous rock cairns. All in all, a great day to combine hiking and some history. ~ Holt
