We combined a hike and a history lesson for this walk around the Allatoona Pass park.  The site of a Civil War battle that occured in October of 1864, we learned a bit about some of the major sites of the battle including two forts, numerous earthworks, the old Tennesee wagon road and of course the railroad cut itself.  We also took a long walk out a peninsula that is part of the battlefield site and then returned by walking along the lakeshore that has been revealed by the lower winter lake levels.  Taking the Tennesee Wagon road for a short distance and then hiking over to the rail cut, we did an out and back on the railbed to click off some additional miles.  On the way back, we did a detour to visit the Star Fort where some of the worst fighting occured before reaching the parking lot and the end of our hike.  ~ Holt
