Fri, May 14 2021 - Coopers Furnace and Pine Mountain Summit from Old River Road (View Original Event Details)
|
What an absolutely beautiful day for a hike at Pine Mountain and Coopers Furnace. We first visited the overlook at the base of the dam where they were actually releasing water. The Etowah was full and nearly out of its banks. Then we passed Coopers Furnace on our way to the base of Pine Mountain by way of a bike trail that followed a beautiful stream. We climbed up the east face of Pine Mountain, reaching the summit at the David Archer Overlook. The skies were crystal clear and the dry air aided us in seeing the skyline of downtown Atlanta, Sweat Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain and to the west, all the way into eastern Alabama.
On the descent down Pine Mountain, we observed the mountain laurel which was in full bloom in Whiskey Hollow. We took the connector trail and then on to the Laurel Ridge trail before descending on the limited access park road until we reached our cars and the end of our hike. Our three hour hike covered 7 miles and about 1400 feet of elevation gain. ~ Holt
