We had a great time together in the Park this evening.  The crystal clear fall weather couldn't have been much better for our loop hike around park via the shore of Lake Clara Meer and the well-groomed landscaped terrain just east of the Atlanta Botanical Garden.  Sadly one of our favorite little "hidden gems," the off-the-beaten-path "Six-Springs Trail," has had to be closed due to its boardwalk sections deteriorating and becoming unsafe.  This is just one more sign of the ravages of the pandemic, which has plundered the funding and manpower that would otherwise be available to make such repairs.
Everyone got a big kick out of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's first open-air performance since the Covid crisis began a year and a half ago.  Their well-lit stage was set up by the lake in the beautiful natural "Oak Hill" amphitheater adjoining 10th Street, with about 500 appreciative ASO fans attending including our friendly AOC subgroup and covering the entire sprawling grassy hillside.  Early in our hike we had no problem staking out an ideal spot for our beach blankets & light folding chairs just 30 yards out from the stage.
The concert included excerpts from Gershin's "An American in Paris," Bernstein's "Symphonic Dances," and a new Wynton Marsalis violin concerto featuring ASO Asst. Concertmaster Justin Bruns  After a loud standing ovation the Orchestra concluded the concert with two rousing march encores, causing dozens of us in the crowd to rowdily dance & sing to Sousa's "Stars & Stripes Forever"!
Many thanks to Joyce for doing a fine job co-leading the memorable outing, as she has for other "Hike + Symphony" outings in past years. She and several other AOCers brought delicious homemade brownies and other treats to share.  Check out Joyce's photos (including a few taken by Lee) by clicking the Photo Album box on the upper right (which links to this Facebook page:) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=joyce.taaffe&set=a.10160099288420260  ). - Posted by Charlie at 10 PM Tue Sep 28th

Piedmont Park Hike & Concert - 9.28.21A night not to be missed! The weather was perfect for the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra concert and for our hike around the park before the concert started. Shirley stayed with our belongings while we hiked. We arrived back at "Oak Hill" just on time for the music to begin, and because our group had seats up close to the bandstand, had a wonderful view of the orchestra and perfect seating to hear the music. Nina was a brand new member on her fist AOC event tonight! (Welcome to the AOC, Nina!) ~ Joyce
