Write Up: We were delighted to have exactly our target number of 20 AOCers come out for this 21st annual Hash House Harriers New Years Day hike/jog and backyard dinner party -- our 2nd annual AOC participation in the big event. About 200 total revelers (mostly who were veteran hashers from this "Drinking Club with a Running Problem") took part in the "hash" including about 15 "hash virgins" from the AOC who were giving the sport a try for the first time.
After meeting at the Doraville K-Mart parking lot on Buford Highway and reciting together the "Wedge of Allegiance" cheese-lovers' creed, we took off together on the adventurous "follow-the-hare" hike/run. Within the first half mile it took us down a steep extension ladder followed by 200 yards of wading in ankle-deep water through a tunnel underneath I-285 near Spaghetti Junction. Then to exit the tunnel it was one-at-a-time single-file along a very narrow concrete ledge above a big pool of cold water! Congratulations esp. to you hash virgins for completed this much scarier than normal hash hazard!!
A mid-hash refreshment break was lying in wait just a couple of hundred yards ahead after which the trail took us through more "shiggy" (briars and woods) and through a few neighborhoods -- eventually ending at the "on-in" and festive "down-down" party in the cozy wind-protected back yard of one of the hashers on Bagley Drive (just N of Chamblee-Tucker Road). The total hash distance had been only about 3 miles (hared expertly by Public Enema the founder of the event and his partner in crime Panty Waste).
The down-down outdoor dinner party featured all the promised Wisconsin-style culinary delights including fried cheese curds, bratwurst, rice & beans, and French-Canadian style french fries, cheese & gravy. Due to the unusually large number of "hash-virgins" it was decided to let them all remain virgins until their next hash at which time they'll be sung to and made to chug beer. By about 5:30 PM the party was over and everyone had been offered a shuttle ride back to the start.
We were grateful for sunny skies and a big campfire despite it being in the low 40s. A good time was had by all and everyone agreed that this is something we should offer again for New Years Day 2011!
