Tue, Jun 14 2022 - Early AM at Island Ford (View Original Event Details)
|
An early hike turned out to be a good idea. The temps were 78 when we started shortly before 7:30 AM. It was in the 80s by the time we finished and with the humidity, it felt much hotter. It turns out that snakes also like warm mornings. This copperhead was basking in the heat right in the middle of the trail. It was so motionless that it looked dead. Joyce helped out by safely urging it off the trail. (We had to pass by the same point on the return trip and didn't want to risk stepping on it.)
Full length of the copperhead. It was about 17 inches long, but that is a guess. I didn't hold a tape measure to it.
Here are the hikers....
