Write Up:Refreshingly cool temperatures and sunny skies greeted us at Lake Winfield Scott, immediate gratification as we started up the slope to Jarrard Gap. We revelled in the clean fresh air and delighted in the heavy green growth of summer covering the earth. One keen-eyed member spied a bear, but it ambled away before the rest of us could catch a sight. Some remarked that the Freeman Trail fails to get easier with experience, or with blowndown trees forcing a scramble for a safe crossing. The Freeman Trail and the AT both proved quite popular with the ground dwelling bees, who left most of us with marks and painful reminders of the joys of communing with nature. But the fresh, cool air, surprisingly clear views, and good hiking company made for an all-round excellent day to be outdoors.
