This turned out to be an adventurous day even though we stayed in the metro area.  We started out by taking a side trail to the Cherokee trail...bypassed much of the ice that way although still a little slippery on the flat ground.  But so much fun hiking through some snow and still the mountain looked beautiful draped in it.   We hiked past the carving and then around by the grist mill and a couple of lakes and then took a break before heading up.

The walkup trail wasn't very busy on this day but we did see a few others on it.  It was even deeper snow though and the warm light from the setting sun made it all look even prettier.  A few of us stopped right below the railing while a couple of us worked our way very carefully to the summit...but everyone had a nice view of the sunset (see pics) which we barely got in before thick cloud cover rolled in about a half hour later.

Thanks to Nancy for putting this one together and it was definitely a very memorable Stone Mtn hike! - Tony C
