Write Up:On a gorgeous Saturday morning, twelve hearty hikers started down the Old Growth Forest trail to find the LARGEST tree in Georgia. The giant tulip poplar, which measured 19.5 feet in circumference and just over 6 feet in diameter, was surrounded by an army of ancient hemlocks. After taking leave of this majestic place, the hikers went on to bushwhack up and down numerous ravines for about 2 miles along Cooper Creek. Following a leisurely lunch on the banks of Cooper Creek, the group made a quick loop on the Eyes on Wildlife Trail, and then headed up the Yellow Mountain Trail. The fall colors of the forest understory made for a beautiful hike up and over the mountain to Addie Gap. The group made a final bushwhack down the mountain to the bottomland, crossed through the icy waters of Cooper Creek and back to our vehicles.
