Sat, Jun 1 2013 - Learn the Basics of Rowing! Free annual event on the Hooch! (View Original Event Details)
|
Thanks to the Atlanta Rowing Club for a very enjoyable “National Learn to Row Day” experience this afternoon! Their friendly volunteers did a fantastic job hosting their big annual "open house," with free basic training for about 90 rowing novices including our invited AOC subgroup.
Thanks to Joyce Taaffe for this link to her many nice photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152368937820260.1073741903.540275259&type=1&l=e7b0ec1bfb
After checking in at their large boathouse overlooking Roswell’s lovely Bull Sluice Lake, our two AOC “crews” watched a training video and got some expert coaching - both on indoor rowing machines and on outdoor rowing simulators mounted to a floating walkway. Our “grand finale” was getting to actually "crew" together - rowing a nice double-hull training boat with an expert “cockswain” and instructor aboard who coached and steered us through a circular course around an island in the lake. I thought we all did great!
Tory Vornholt, the event’s director this year, is active in both the Atlanta Rowing Club and the AOC. We look forward to working with Tory in the future to offer similar “learn-to-row” experiences for AOCers, with hopes that some of us will consider joining their fine club.
