Write Up:

Atlanta’s favorite park could hardly have been more resplendent for this memorable evening that combined nature and classical music.  We began by exploring some of the wilder parts of Piedmont Park including the “Trail of the 6 Springs,” the Botanical Garden entrance trail (with its giant new “topiary face”) and a wooded creekside trail that loops from the Park’s north end onto the Beltline.
I was delighted that almost everyone wanted to stay after the hike and enjoy the free ASO concert.  Many in the group commented on what a splendid setting the elegant new “Promenade” is for outdoor music, and the Atlanta Symphony did not disappoint!  We found a perfect overlook for relaxing with a great view of the stage and excellent acoustics.  Some brought very elegant and delicious food & refreshments and even stemmed wine glasses “a la Chastain Park!”
Conducted by the ASO’s principal guest conductor Donald Runnicles, the program featured concertmaster David Coucheron in an amazing stand-up performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto - also Beethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony.  The concert concluded with Sousa’s “Stars & Stripes Forever” march as a fitting foot-stomping finale!
We felt very lucky to have incredible weather this evening with no rain.  Everyone agreed that we should offer an “encore symphony hike” in the Park again next Thursday May 23rd when the ASO will offer a second free concert in the Promenade led by our beloved principal director Robert Spano.
