With storms looming in the forecast, it was touch and go as to whether this event would have to be cancelled. Finally, the forecast seemed a bit better, so the trip leaders gambled on making it a GO. The 15 AOC'ers that showed up at Island Ford were rewarded with a brisk hike under muggy skies. We completed the lollipop of the "newer" section of the trail despite a very muddy section.
Upon arriving back at the parking lot, we utilized our sophisticated weather tracking devices* and chose to forge ahead along the river. We picked up the pace for the last 15 minutes as the skies darkened and thunder rolled. We got into our cars as the first few drops of rain sizzled on the windshields. Once we were all safely inside the North River Tavern, the heavens opened and the winds raged. Later we realized the extent of the downed trees and power lines, structure damage and electirical outages, but we were blissfully unaware as we posted an admirable finish at team trivia.
