Sat, Sep 7 2013 - Rabun Bald and Bartram Trail lookout rock (View Original Event Details)
|
From among D5 hikes, this one definitely counts as one of the more strenuous. We compared it to Arkaquah and Coosa Bald and of course they are all different and hard to compare, but I maintain that of the three this the prettiest.
With relaxed breaks at the tower on Rabun Bald and the lookout rock, we still got back to the cars in 7 hours and 10 minutes. The trail was in good shape, the gravel road less so. The trick was to drive slowly enough to spot the potholes and manoeuvre around them.
Although we saw plenty of chewed-up forest floor, we saw no pigs/wild boars/crossbreeds. Larry reported hearing some grunts, but nine hikers make a lot of noise, so Mr/Ms Pig wisely stayed away.
