SNOWPOCALYPSE HIKE 2014!

We began our adventure with celebratory cupcakes to mark Divya's 100th event with the AOC.  We tromped through the woods and across streams, savoring the cold, crisp air.  We did a little bushwhacking up a hill and across a ridge, then back down along the creek, adding an exploratory segment.  About halfway through the hike, the first snow flurries began to blow across our path.  The flurries intensified and soon the landscape was blanketed in white.  The air vibrated with the muffled stillness that snowfall heralds.

After we completed our walkabout, returned to our vehicles and said our farewells, an adventure of a very different sort began.  It quickly dawned on us that the same snowflakes that lent such a serene beauty to the forest, were wreaking havoc on the roadways.  Just getting out of the Sope Creek parking lot took about half an hour, as cars were already sliding around to thwart our exit.  We all have our stories to add to the thousands of tales of transportation woe, but suffice to say that we all arrived safely home.  For most of us, the commute lasted 3 to 4 hours.  Joyce made sure that everyone checked in with her, and then reported back to the group that all were accounted for.

January 28th will long be remembered for traffic gridlock, but we dozen hikers will also relish fond memories of a peaceful trek through the snow.
