Wed, Oct 15 2014 - Slow and Steady - Arkaquah Trail to Brasstown Bald (View Original Event Details)
|
The ascent up to Brasstown Bald was great, though the trails showed signs of a recent storm. A few trees were downed on the trail, and the rocks and leaves were wet. The overcast skies, however, held their moisture, so the views were inspiring. We were grateful for the good weather.
Because of the 5 inches of rain that fell atop the bald overnight, several trees at the top were downed, requiring that people begin their 1/2 mile trek to the top on the road. We quickly were rerouted onto the asphalt trail, so that we could make the climb to the top. It was worth the effort. We had beautiful views from atop the platform and were able to take an abundance of scenic photos.
As soon as we again reached the Brasstown Bald parking area, the rain began to fall, and didn't let up for the entire 5.5 mile trek down to Track Rock. Since the second half of the hike was essentially a descent, some of it steep on wet rocks, we had to proceed carefully to avoid slipping. Our hiking poles came in very handy.
We were all glad that we did the hike, and we loved the views at the top of Brasstown Bald; but this is definitely a hike to take in dry weather. I'm grateful that we had no injuries.
We added a few photos of the Slackpackers who were staying at the Hikers' Hostel. We stopped by the hostel on our drive home so that we could stay hello to John and Kevin's group. They had just completed their 4th day of hiking on the AT. ~ Joyce
