Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Itinerary: | |||||||
The Fiery Gizzard Trail is located in the Grundy Forest Natural Area near Grundy Forest State Park. We will be hiking a portion of the trail that has views of waterfalls, boulder fields, and historic remnants.
The trail begins at a Parking area with Restrooms near the State Park off of Fiery Gizzard Rd. between Monteagle and Tracy City, TN. We will hike approximately 0.7 miles on the Day Loop trail crossing Little Fiery Gizzard Creek where we will take the Fiery Gizzard Trail. After another 3.5 miles we will take the 0.4 mile spur to Raven’s Point where we will eat lunch. Given the rocky terrain, this part of the hike is somewhat arduous and may take longer to navigate so bring snacks to tide you over until lunch. After leaving the point, we head back up the spur to Raven’s campsite where we will hang a left and take the Dog Hole Trail approximately 3 miles along the ridge back to the Fiery Gizzard Trail.
While most of the trail is easy or moderate, there are a few sections where we will be hiking across rocky sections on the way to Raven Point. Getting to Raven Point requires a steep ascent, but rewards you with spectacular views. If the weather is warm enough and we have time, we may take the opportunity to dip our feet at one of the waterfall pools closer to the trailhead as we finish our journey.
The entire hike is approximately 10 miles. Due to the rocky sections and ascent near Raven’s Point you should be in good physical condition with good balance along with sturdy hiking boots. This is exploratory as your tripleaders have not hiked this trail previously though we have studied the maps and feel comfortable navigating the marked trails.

Therefore, they will not be taking riders unless also registered for the Sunday AOC Chattanooga biking event. No lodging has been decided yet, but can be discussed if needed** Hikers returning to the carpool may decide by vehicle whether to stop for dinner. Please be sure of your driver’s plans before leaving the carpool location or plan on being a driver. * We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
