Itinerary:

EVENT PLAN:  Please join me for an easy 3 miles of hiking this Thu afternoon here in NE Atlanta on the lovely trails of three new DeKalb County parks: Frazier-Rowe, Briarlake Forest, and Mary Scott Nature Park.  We'll hike about 1 mile in each park and take advantage of the expected sunny high-50s weather.  Since all 3 parks are within an easy 5-minute drive from one another we'll simply caravan in our vehicles between their 3 free parking lots.

WHERE & WHEN? We'll meet a few minutes before 1:30 PM at the Frazier-Rowe Park bulletin board and trailhead. That spot is conveniently located at 2868 LaVista Road beside "Sprig Restaurant" and the free parking lot of Vista Grove shopping center. (See easy detailed directions below and for a zoomable map or satellite view click above on the square blue & green "Event Location" icon.

CANINE COMPANIONS OK!  Bring your well-behaved dog if you like, but please make sure that he or she is leashed and under your control at all times.

ABOUT the PARKS and VOLUNTEER EFFORTS to MAINTAIN THEM :    Frazier-Rowe Park and its trail system, bridges/structures and botanical displays were designed and built since early 2013 by hard-working "Friends of the Park" and Boy Scout volunteers on about 10 acres of forested property in DeKalb County just northeast of the LaVista/ Oak Grove Road intersection.  We hikers can easily connect to other scenic trails in the same forest that adjoin Coralwood Elementary School and are maintained by DeKalb County  I'm proud to be among the corps of neighborhood volunteers that are improving and maintaining these nice parks. We enjoy hosting monthly or so "work days" to remove invasive species, plant native trees, flowers & shrubs, build new structures, etc. Let me know if you'd like to participate!

Briarlake Forest Park on Briarlake Road (just north of LaVista Rd) is "brand new" and boasts about 20 acres of beautiful old growth forested property. There's a well preserved 150-year-old farm house at the parking lot.

Mary Scott Park on Briarcliff Road (just north of Shallowford Rd) is just a few years old.  Its narrow wooded swath of about 10 acres slopes gently downward to a beautiful creek where there are two well-preserved old brick chimneys.

Required Items to Bring:

• Wear comfortable well-broken-in Athletic Shoes or Hiking Boots and Lightweight Clothing appropriate for the weather.

• Hydrate in advance and carry a little water/beverage in a Water Bottle (or "Camelbak," etc.).

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

- Camera or Smartphone. Lots of nice photo-ops!

-  If you have Trekking Poles, consider bringing them.  A simple shoulder-high hiking stick works about as well to improve stability and to transfer weight from your knees & legs to your arms and shoulders.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

FROM I-85 CLAIRMONT RD EXIT (Exit #91) in NE Atlanta to our FRAZIER-ROWE PARK Meetup Spot:   (For a zoomable color MAP and satellite view of this spot and its vicinity click on the square blue & green "Event Location" icon near the top of this article.)

1. From I-85 Exit #91 (GA-23, "Clairmont Rd") take Clairmont Road toward Decatur (south & slightly east) about 1.6 miles to the traffic light at LaVista Road.

2. Turn Left onto LaVista and go eastward 0.9 mile (THROUGH the next traffic light at Oak Grove Rd) to the small Vista Grove shopping center on your Left (at 2868 LaVista Rd).  Look for the green & white striped roofs and park near the Subway and "Sprig" restaurants on the end of the shopping center
 by the woods.

3. We'll gather at the "Frazier-Rowe Park" bulletin board and trailhead on the edge of the woods - just a few feet from the Sprig restaurant entrance.  Please be on time, allowing for traffic.
