If you're looking for a challenging backpacking trip through virgin forest, come join us for one of the Southern Highlands most spectacular hikes as we backpack in the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness. The hike begins at a modest elevation of 2140 feet as we ascend the naked ground trail. Along the trail, we'll see old-growth poplars and hemlocks 11-14 feet in girth flanking little Santeetlah Creek. You may choose to wear water shoes at the several water crossings. At mile 3.5, the long hard pull begins as hike toward naked ground gap. After a series of switchbacks and a very steep grade, we will intersect with the Haoe lead trail at naked ground and continue hiking another 1.4 mile to the Bob Stratton Bald (elevation 5340'). This is where we will set up camp for the night. Total hiking for the first day is around 7 miles. At the bald, we should be rewarded with spectacular views, a beautiful sunset, a starlit night and a roaring fire (weather permitting). I have never encountered a water shortage on the Bald as there are several springs. Sunday, we we will hike a total of 7 miles down the Haoe Lead trail and Jenkins Meadow trail back to our cars.
